What each mode encodes

A QR code is simply a compact way of storing short text that a camera can decode. Three modes cover almost every need:

• URL — a website, Google Maps location, YouTube video, Google Form, or UPI link. On scan, the phone offers to open it directly.
• Plain text — a Wi-Fi password, coupon code, serial number, short message, or set of instructions. The scanner just displays the text.
• Contact (vCard) — name, phone, email, company, and address bundled into one code. A single scan lets someone save you straight to their contacts, which is perfect on a visiting card.

Why use a QR code at all

QR codes remove typing. Instead of asking a customer to key in a long web address or a 10-digit number, you let the camera do the work. For Indian businesses this is now everywhere: UPI payment stickers at the counter, menu links in restaurants, feedback forms, product-authenticity pages, and event check-ins. A printed code on a carton or a GST invoice can point to a landing page, a warranty registration form, or a WhatsApp catalogue.

Getting a code that actually scans

A few practical points decide whether a code works reliably in the real world:

• Keep the content short. Shorter text produces a simpler, more forgiving pattern. Use a URL shortener for very long links so the code stays easy to read from a distance.
• Maintain contrast. A dark pattern on a light background scans best. Avoid printing a light code over a busy photo.
• Leave the quiet zone. The blank margin around the code is part of the design — do not crop right up to the squares.
• Print big enough. As a rough guide, make the code at least one-tenth of the scanning distance. A standee viewed from a metre needs a code around 10 cm across.
• Test before mass printing. Scan the downloaded image with two or three different phones before ordering a thousand stickers or a flex banner.

Static codes and what they cannot do

The codes here are static: the destination is baked into the pattern. That makes them free, permanent, and reliant on no third-party service to keep working. The trade-off is that you cannot later change where a printed code points, and there is no built-in scan counter. If you need to edit the target or track scans, point the QR at a link you control — such as a short link or a page on your own site — and change the redirect there instead of reprinting the code.

Everything runs in your browser, so it works offline once the page has loaded and behaves the same on a laptop or a phone. Generate as many codes as you like — there is no per-code charge and no daily limit.

How to use it

Frequently asked questions

Do the QR codes expire or stop working?

No. These are static codes with the content encoded directly in the pattern, so they keep working indefinitely and depend on no external service. A URL code only becomes useless if the website it points to goes offline.

Can I change where a printed QR code points later?

Not directly, because the destination is fixed inside the pattern. The workaround is to encode a short link or a page you control, then change that redirect later so the same printed code opens a new destination.

Is there a scan limit or any charge per code?

No. You can generate and download unlimited codes for free, whether it is a single code for a flyer or thousands for product cartons.

Will the code track how many times it was scanned?

No, static codes have no built-in analytics. If you need scan counts, point the QR at a trackable link on your own site or a link service that reports clicks.

Can I use this for UPI payments?

You can encode a UPI collect or intent link as a URL QR, and most phones will open the payment app on scan. For an official merchant payment sticker, generate the QR through your bank or payment provider so it is registered to your account.

What size should I print the QR code?

As a rough rule, make the code at least one-tenth of the expected scanning distance, so a code read from about a metre should be around 10 cm wide. Always keep the blank margin around it intact so scanners can lock on.
